Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Summary

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of betting options and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
