Omaha Hi Lo: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/low provides an amazing range of betting possibilities and because you have many individuals shooting for the high, and several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
