Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems difficult at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
