Omaha Hi-Lo: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough.
