Omaha Hi Lo: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha hi/lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
