Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and many trying for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
