Omaha Hi-Low: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting collection of wagering possibilities and because you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as many shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi/low.
