Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, and several shooting for the low hand.
