Omaha Hi/Low: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
While it seems complicated at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an exciting range of betting choices and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, along with many trying for the low hand.
