Omaha Hi Low: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complex at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi/lo offers an exciting range of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several players shooting for the high, and a few battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
