Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of wagering choices and because you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
