Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complicated at first, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and seeing that you have several players trying for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha hi lo.
