Omaha Hi Low: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals battling for the high, and several trying for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
