Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high, along with many battling for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha Hi-Lo.
