Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players can get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
