Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at first, following a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo offers an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
