Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha Hi-Lo starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing range of betting choices and seeing that you have many players shooting for the high, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
