Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an exciting array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, along with a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
