Omaha Hi/Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi/low starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of betting options and because you have numerous players trying for the high hand, as well as a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
