Omaha Hi/Low: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
While it seems complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an exciting collection of betting possibilities and because you have several players shooting for the high, and several battling for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
