Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
