Omaha Hi Low: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease.
